Shacks

Shacks are small improvised huts which are usually built on the outskirts of rural areas (townships) in South Africa. The residents are mostly immigrants who moved to the cities looking for work. They settle in squatter settlements, sometimes illegal or unauthorized. Squatter settlements are mostly found in developing nations like here in South Africa. The improvised shacks are built using scrap materials: Often plywood, and corrugated metal sheets or plastic.
The residents do not have proper sanitation, electricity or telephone services. The percentage of crime, drugs and disease is more than in other cities, but hope and faith is definitely there and you see the residents has the initiatives for improvements. What I experienced was that the residents are trying to make a home despite their limited resources. Therefore, it is an architecture form that is raised out of necessity.

I made these images at the informal settlement at the outskirts of refengkgotso township in the province Free State, South Africa.
